Under/Over Valued Starting Pitchers

Undervalued

Ricky Nolasco, FLA - ADP: SP33 - Ricky Nolasco burst onto the fantasy scene last season with a top-20 SP finish and an incredible second half. He was the top pitcher after the All-Star break last year, with a 3.29 ERA, sub-1.00 WHIP, and an unbelievable 98-to-12(!) K/BB ratio. It was no fluke that Nolasco pitched this well in 2008, and he is going far too late in drafts considering his up-and-coming status. If you can grab him as a SP3 or SP4, consider yourself lucky as you ride him to a championship.

Zack Greinke, KC - ADP: SP34 - While not having quite the upside that Nolasco has, Greinke is being drafted in a similar spot and provides great value in 2009. Greinke had career highs in IP (202), strikeouts (183), ERA (3.47), and wins (13) last season, and is only 25 years old. There is plenty of room for improvement and he will be pitching for a young Royals team whose offense will surely provide more run support than they did last season. Look for Greinke to have 15 wins and approach 200 Ks, en route to a top-20 fantasy finish.

Matt Garza, TB - ADP: SP41 - After a slow start to his career in Minnesota, Garza started to show why he was a top prospect after winning 11 games in 2008 with the Rays. A sub-4.00 ERA, a respectable WHIP of 1.24, and 180+ innings were multiple reasons why Garza helped the rays to an AL championship. He is only 25 years old and still has plenty of room to grow. Considering he never had less than a 1 K/INN ratio in the minor leagues, it’s completely reasonable to believe that Garza’s strikeout numbers will increase this season (only 128 in 182 innings last year). If starts striking out batters anywhere near his minor league level, he will make the jump into fantasy prominance this season.

Kevin Slowey, MIN - ADP: SP48 - Do not miss out on Kevin Slowey this season, as he will be a household name by this time next year. Slowey is going to be the #3 pitcher for the Twins rotation, but it would be absurd to see him finish the season as their #1 fantasy pitcher. His control is impeccable, only walking 24 batters in 160 innings of work last season, good for a 1.12 WHIP. While his fly ball numbers are a little high for most’s liking, he’s still young and that is something he can improve upon. He averaged 8+ Ks per 9 innings in the minor leagues, so it’s likely that he will improve on his strikeout numbers this season, as well. Look for 15+ wins, 150+ Ks, a sub-1.20 WHIP, and 180+ innings in 2009.

Overvalued

Rich Harden, CHC - ADP: SP17 - 10-2. 2.07 ERA. 181 Ks in 148 innings. Why doesn’t this pitcher deserve to be drafted among the top 20 starting pitchers on draft day? Well, when you have the injury history as extensive as the one that Rich Harden has, it’s too high to “hope” that he stays healthy. Last season was the first time since 2005 that Harden started 20+ games. Even last year he missed 6 weeks of the season with a shoulder injury, the same shoulder that limited him to a combined 16 starts in 2007 and 2008. Harden has some of the best stuff in the majors, but taking him in the eighth or ninth round is going to cause you be near-perfect while filling out the rest of your rotation.

AJ Burnett, NYY - ADP: SP18 - Coming off a career year and pitching for one of the most important offenses in the major league, one would expect Burnett to be a top fantasy pitcher. However, give his injury history and new contract, he is one to avoid this season. Burnett had his two best seasons in 2008 and 2005, both of which were contract years. Many players pitch above their heads during contract years to cash in on a new deal. Burnett was mediocre in his 2006 and 2007 campaigns, then compiled a 18-win, 231 strikeout season last year in efforts to opt out of his Toronto contract. When you add in Burnett’s elbow injuries in the past (over 10 DL trips in his career), it’s clear that you should let another owner overpay for Burnett in 2009.

Daisuke Matsuzaka, BOS - ADP: SP20 - Dice-K had an unbelievable season last year, with 18 wins and 154 K’s in 167 innings. While these stats are impressive, it’s his WHIP and K/BB ratio that are bothersome. A 1.32 WHIP is hardly ace-like and he ranks in this catagory next to starting pitchers such as Gil Meche, Wandy Rodriguez, Paul Byrd, and Jamie Moyer. His walks will get him into trouble this season; he was lucky last year with an abnormally low opponent’s batting average with runners in scoring position of .164. His high pitch counts will never get him deep into games, as evidenced by his zero complete games last season and inability to make it 6+ innings in 14 of his 29 starts. Dice-K is fortunate to have the Red Sox run support, but this season he will drop out of the top-25 starting pitchers.

David Price, TB - ADP: SP29 - Unless you are in a keeper league, there’s no way that David Price should be taken within the top 30 starting pitchers during your draft. He’s not even starting the season in the major leagues. He will not join Tampa’s rotation until May at the earliest, and even then he will be their fifth starter. Barring an injury to one of the top four starters (Shields, Kazmir, Garza, Sonnanstine), Price will be relegated to long relief duties or games where a fifth starter is required. I love Price as much as the next guy, but only for the future. Don’t expect double digit wins and 180 innings in his rookie campaign.

Starting Pitchers the RB’s of Fantasy Baseball

Just as starting Running Backs demand a premium in football, Starting Pitchers demand a premium in baseball…are at least they should be. (in H2H leagues)

Every Fantasy Footballer knows that the Running Back position is the most important to fill. Nearly every Draft goes RB, RB, RB, RB and some leagues will see no position other than RB drafted in the first round. Why is this? In the era of RBBC; there are very few backs who are a lock to get 25+ touches a game and post consistant high scores every week. A solid running game in football will lead almost any squad to the playoffs. Have you ever seen a team with 2 studs in the backfield not make the playoffs?

Starting pitchers in baseball carry the same weight and can have the same effect in regards to making the playoffs. However, not everyone has caught on and its rare to see more than 1-2 pitchers go in the first round of most drafts. The sooner you catch on…the sooner you’ll be out of the cellar and become an active participant of the 3 most exciting fantasy weeks of the year.

Pitchers, especially SPs, should start receiving the same respect as their football cousin, the RB. Just as their are few RB “locks”, their are only a few SP “locks”. In our CBS league, only 6 pitchers scored over 500 points last season; and only 3 pitchers have averaged over 500 points over the last 3 seasons. (CC, Johan and Webb were on both lists)

By comparison, 15 batters were on the ‘08 500+ list and 16 on the 3-year list.

Not only are there fewer “sure things” at the position, it is also the only position in which an “Average” player has a 50/50 chance to post a Negative week.

Couple that with the power of a 2-start Stud and there should be little doubt remaining the SP is the most important position in fantasy baseball.

So just as AP and LT went #1,#2 in every football draft; expect CC, Johan and Webb to go #1,#2,#3 in every baseball draft. (they would if I had the first 3 picks)
